Icefields Parkway avalanche still blocking road

Icefields Parkway – A section of the Icefields Parkway between Lake Louise and the Saskatchewan River Crossing has been closed due to an avalanche.

The slide was triggered Thursday afternoon during routine avalanche control work on Mount Hector in Banff National Park, closing Highway 93 between the Trans-Canada and Highway 11.

According to Alberta Transportation officials, there’s a “very low confidence” of the road reopening by 6 p.m. Friday.

“We have road crews in there with heavy road machinery,” Parks Canada spokesperson Tania Peters told CBC News Friday.

“We’re working to clear out that debris. There is a large volume of it. It’s going to take them some time,” Peters explained.

In addition, Highway 16 west of Highway 93 is currently impassable due to a rock slide.
