The slide was triggered Thursday afternoon during routine avalanche control work on Mount Hector in Banff National Park, closing Highway 93 between the Trans-Canada and Highway 11.
According to Alberta Transportation officials, there’s a “very low confidence” of the road reopening by 6 p.m. Friday.
“We have road crews in there with heavy road machinery,” Parks Canada spokesperson Tania Peters told CBC News Friday.
“We’re working to clear out that debris. There is a large volume of it. It’s going to take them some time,” Peters explained.
In addition, Highway 16 west of Highway 93 is currently impassable due to a rock slide.
