Los Angeles (EON) – Senator Fred Thompson has declared that he will be formally entering the 2008 White House race.
He made the announcement during a taped appearance on NBC’s The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. The show will air on Wednesday night. he stated “I’m running for president of the United States. I decided it was time to step up.
Reporters were allowed to listen to a live audio feed of the interview. Jay Leno’s late night show has been used by other politicians to launch campaigns including California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Thompson talked about foreign affairs as well as national security in the interview. He stated “We can’t afford to go into a situation and not show resolve. The most dangerous thing in the world that could happen to the United States of America is for people to think we’re weak and divided.”
The interview took place while his Republican counterparts debated in New Hampshire.
