New York – According to reports, more than 1.5 million Americans have for pre ordered a G1, the first smartphone running Google’s Android.
A first wave of orders with T-Mobile had forced the operator to announce a stock shortage of the first Android smartphone even before its availability in the market on October 22. Then, after ensuring that its suppliers could meet the demand, T-Mobile has relaunched it’s pre-orders.
In just three weeks, T-Mobile has sold 1.5 million phones. A figure that far exceeds initial estimates which were between 400,000 and 500,000 units. T-Mobile would have ordered a total of 2 millionsmartphones from HTC.
The iPhone has paved the way for the G1 but the G1 and its successors at other carriers may wind up cutting into iPhone sales — or they could simply grow the overall market for better smartphones.
The G1 arrives on October 22 in the US. No Canadian release date has been announced.
