Ottawa – The laboratories of Mozilla Firefox have launched Geode, a system of geolocation for your browser that puts real-time Internet users on a map. This application can be used, for example, to find restaurants nearby from the search engine itself.
To launch the project, Mozilla has enjoyed the cooperation of Skyhook, a company that is able to locate a computer on a plane thanks to wireless networks around it for a triangulation system. The geolocation of this company can determine the location within seconds and with an accuracy of between 10 and 20 meters, according picked Others / press BBC News.
With this tool, Mozilla wishes to go beyond a simple online map. It also allows access to local news on the area in which the user or an RSS reader that shows differences depending on whether the Internet user is at work or at home.
One other possible benefit will be for advertisers who can target prospective costumers based on their location.
Firefox ensures that one of the main pillars in this project is to protect user privacy. Therefore, Geode is strictly controlled by the individual. When a website asks how the user’s location, a bar service allows you to decide if they want to give their exact whereabouts, district or city where you are. Besides the users themselves will be responsible for deciding service providers geolocation and the methods used.
For now the project is at an experimental stage. If the tests end with success, this tool geolocation will be incorporated into the version 3.1 of Firefox.
