New Product Line Features 8 New Embedded Market Products
Beaverton, Oregon- The plans for Intel that feature their new system-on-a-chip are beginning to take real shape, with their introduction of their first 8 products bound for the embedded chip market.
The new devices are members of the EP80579 family, intended for communications, security and other type functions.
Nearly 15 products in total are planned in the SOC product area according to executives at Intel.
A “Canmore†chip that will be designed to function in set top boxes is due to be released later this year.
Next year, a follow up chip named “Sodaville†is slated to be released, followed by chips “Moorestownâ€, “Lincroft†and several other system-on-a-chip or SOC chips to follow after that.
The embedded device chips are a sort of trial for the next generation of computer chips that will be forthcoming from Intel that will feature the Atom Processor.
These first SOC chips are based on the Pentium M core model.
The decision to keep separate or design all a chips function on the same piece of silicon has been one of the primary decisions facing chip manufacturers in recent months.
A SOC is sometimes also called a ASIC chip, or the sort of integrated chip commonly found on a game controller, or other such device.
