Keys To City Computer Network Surrendered By Jailed Administrator

San Francisco- The mayor of San Francisco met with the incarcerated Information Technology Administrator Terry Childs on Monday, and was able to convince Childs to release the City network passwords.

The computer network for San Francisco is a multi billion dollar WAN or wide area network, and controls many different vital functions that administrate the City.

Last week Childs made international headlines when he was arrested and charged with four counts of IT computer tampering, after which he refused to surrender the key administrative passwords that allowed full access to the City network.

By his actions, Terry Childs in effect held the entire City of San Francisco computer network temporarily hostage.

The Cisco computer network that the City of San Francisco uses shut out efforts by city administrators attempting to control it, until Childs gave up the key passwords on Monday.

The computer network controls about 60 percent of the municipal functions of the City.

Childs felt strongly that he could not trust his former employers and had different delusions of grandeur.

It was this sort of attitude that Terry Childs adopted which caused him to lose his job and be arrested for computer tampering.

The Mayor of San Francisco, Mayor Gavin Newsom did not tell anyone of his mission to get the passwords back, but his efforts were successful much to the relief of everyone.

If a key computer system had failed, or a crisis arose during the time that the city administration did not have control of the network, the potential problems could literally boggle the mind.
