Google And Other Big Business Begins To Take Sides
Toronto-There has been a continued debate about the actions of Bell Canada, and other large Internet service providers in attempting to regulate the activity of Internet users that use large amounts of bandwidth.
There has been a formal complain lodged in April by the Canadian Association of Internet Providers, against Bell Canada and other larger providers.
The complaint has been lodged with the Canadian Radio Television and Telecommunications Commission.
The CRTC is the regulatory agency responsible for supervising all electronic radio and telecommunications in Canada.
Now, big businesses are starting to weigh in.
On Friday July 11th, Google, the Internet search giant submitted a 15 page support document to the CRTC on behalf of the CAIP and other small Internet service providers that seek to enjoin and prevent Bell Canada from traffic shaping and traffic throttling activity in Canada.
This action attempts to regulate large bandwidth users, often without their knowledge or permission.
Google argues that the Internet is “too important for companies like Canada Bell to try and censor, or act as a gatekeeper, unlawfully regulating traffic without permission.â€
The CRTC has not yet ruled on the complaint, and is continuing to gather input and comment from business and the Canadian public.
