New York – Your internet browser may be out of date and at risk, according to a new report.
As many as 41 percent of all internet browser may be at a security risk according to a new report from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Google and IBM.
The study “Understanding the Web browser threat: Examination of vulnerable online Web browser populations and the “insecurity iceberg, examined Web browsers, particularly in the area of security.
The study suggests that web users simply do not bother to update their browsers when new updates become available.
The study concluded that of the hundreds of millions of users accessing Web browsers worldwide, more than 600 million were at risk of attack for not running the latest, most secure Web browser version as of June 2008.
The data was collected from information from the Google database, Reuters reported.
Firefox users were by far the most likely to have an up-to-date browser with 83.3 percent running an updated browser
65.3 of Safari users were using the most current version of their browser.
The report found that only 47.6 percent of people using Microsoft’s Internet Explorer were running the most secure browser version during the same time period.
“With today’s hostile Intent and drive-by download attack vectors, failure to apply patches promptly or missing them entirely is a recipe for disaster; exposing the host to infection and possibly subsequent data disclosure or loss,” said researchers.
