Attempts Being Made To Hash Out Security Agreement

India - The makers of the popular Blackberry portable communications and e-mail device are meeting with officials of India’s state security to try and establish a set of security agreements.

This is being done to try and pursue the ability of Blackberry users to access their devices in India.

Officials in India seek to be able to intercept e-mails and secure communications when necessary, in an effort to maintain state security and thwart terrorism.

The officials at RIM and Blackberry are trying to make sure that user rights are protected, and are in talks with officials in India regarding security and the ability to intercept or not user e-mails and other types of private communications.

Reports on the progress of these talks vary.

According to the news service Reuters, the telecommunications director of India, Andimutha Raja has stated that RIM was working to “accommodate our requests,” for access to private emails and communications.

But inside sources at RIM have stated that the company would not be able to meet the requests of India for unfettered access to user emails.

Four different providers offer access for RIM Blackberry devices in India, BPL Mobile, Vodafone Essar, Reliance Communications, and Bharti Airtel.
