New York – There have been a number of inquires lately into the usage of plastic baby bottles. New research is tending to indicate that plastic containing the chemical bisphenol A (BPA) may drastically increase the risk of children and infants to certain health conditions.
Bisphenol A has been linked to cancer, obesity, and a number of other serious health issues. These conditions have been caused in animals that were exposed to the chemical in relatively small doses. At the present time, the FDA maintains that the level of the chemical used in plastic, even in baby bottles, is safe.
In a paper entitled: “Baby’s Toxic Bottle,†a group from the University of Missouri has published proof that there are links from the use of plastic baby bottles to higher exposure to this chemical. Bisphenol is believed to be directly increase risk to those exposed to it.
Critics of the report maintain that the chemical is not conclusively proven to increase risk. They argue that this is not an issue that has been scientifically studied, or peer reviewed, and that while the paper from the University of Missouri does raise questions that the issue needs much more review and study.
However, the news and publicity that this issue has raised has many parents on edge. For many, in regards to BPA and Bisphenol the jury is still out. But for parents, it is likely that they will begin to look for Bisphenol free plastics and to urge that the chemical be banned.
