UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar is suffering from an illness which my end his career.

Lesnar is suffering from a bacterial infection in his intestinal tract. The severity of the infection could prevent Lesnar from ever fighting again. UFC president Dana White announced Monday that the intestinal disorder has left Lesnar “very, very sick.”

Today the MMA champion had “minor” surgery, which according to white, went well.

“Leaving Bismarck, N.D. right now,” White stated via Twitter. “Brock had minor surgery and is feeling better.”

“Not 100 percent sure he is out of the woods, but feeling better,” White stated.

Lesnar was diagnosed with mononucleosis earlier this month, and collapsed last week at his vacation home in Canada.

White said, “There’s a possibility Lesnar will never fight again.” Lesnar was scheduled to defend his heavyweight belt against Shane Carwin, but that match has been rescheduled. On Saturday, White said, “He’s got mono and he’s got something else wrong with him. I know what’s wrong with him, but he doesn’t want me talking about it. He doesn’t have cancer or AIDS or anything like this, but he’s got some problems, man”.

Over the last several years the UFC has become a popular sport throughout the world, with it adding that overall thrill that so many seek in sports. One of the stars of the sport, Brock Lesnar, has become sick with an intestinal illness that is threatening his career.

What happened was UFC President Dana White told TMZ that the 32 year old has an intestinal disorder that will require major surgery. White said that they were working with Lesnar to get him to the Mayo Clinic for the treatment that he needs.

This follows a series of reports that he was sick with the H1N1 virus earlier in the year. As his defense of the heavyweight title against Shane Carwin was abruptly canceled and rescheduled.

This is indeed sad news for Lesnar who had overcome numerous obstacles before rising in the UFC. The South Dakota native, who was the NCAA wrestling champion in 2000, had tried and failed to peruse careers in professional wrestling as well as with the Minnesota Vikings.

While it appears as if Lesnar’s career could be over, only time will tell if he will be able to defend the title that he struggled to for so long to win.

Mixed Martial Arts fighting has left boxing in the dust in recent years. This is due to a unique fighting style and because the game isn’t corrupt. That said, after watching Mauricio Shogun Rua fight defending champ Lyoto Machida, I’m beginning to wonder if this sport is heading in the same direction when big money is involved.

At UFC 104, Rua was very strategic. He completely took Machida out of his game. He frustrated Machida the whole fight by eliminating his strengths. Rua used targeted kicks and some punches to make sure the fight fit his fighting style instead of Machida’s. Some say that if Rua was still in his prime, he would have finished Machida off and locked up the victory. Just because he didn’t do that doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be awarded the victory if he outfought his opponent.

When the scores were announced at the Staples Center, almost everyone in the building looked shocked, including Lyoto Machida. While this is unfair to Rua, the significance of the decision goes way beyond that fight. It’s possible that the UFC wanted the champ to remain the champ, but when you strip integrity from the game, your sport is bound to end up like boxing. Eventually, another sport comes around and steals your thunder.

Hopefully this decision was an aberration. For the sake of the sport and all of its fans, let’s hope that’s the case, because in my book, Mauricio Shogun Rua is the current light heavyweight champion.

The hype was there. The Ultimate Fighters promoted a good fight. There was the street fighter against the legendary titleholder. So why was everyone disappointed at the winner? The TV did a good job of setting the stage. Everyone for weeks has been reading every morsel printed about Kimbo and Roy Nelson. Sports casters and viewers were holding their breath as the fight aired Wednesday night. Even when it was over, they were left sitting in awe. Everyone got through round one thinking, “What?”

Roy Nelson’s girth was the topic of several stories before the bout. There were glimpses of it throughout the preview, but no one understood what it meant until the fight. Everyone saw Roy land flat on Kimbo. Roy barely tapped Kimbo with his balled up fist, but Kimbo could not move. It was a disappointing fight. It was like watching the saddest thing in the world. Nothing was happening. There was nowhere for Kimbo to go. He was stuck. Roy could not move. He just laid there, his arms tapping, tapping, and tapping Kimbo.

I had never heard of Kimbo before the scheduled event. The hype for the fight was fierce. Supposedly, Kimbo and Roy were fighting for a contract that will come later down the road. They portrayed Roy as a burger eating has-been. Kimbo was the new kid on the block. However, Kimbo lost the fight. The pudgy burger-eating has-been won. The excitement is just starting, where will it go from here?

Kimbo Slice vs Roy Nelson

In the Ultimate Fighter’s tenth installment, an awaited match between Kimbo Slice and Roy Nelson took place. For anyone not familiar with Slice so far, they may be under a rock, as he has beaten his way to the top of street fights in and around Miami, Florida. But against the doughy and UFC trained Roy Nelson, this did not seem as much of an issue. Kimbo did very well on his feet, and had Roy Nelson backpeddling every time he threw a punch. Unfortunately, this did not last long, as Nelson eventually took him down to the mat. When it comes to the ground game, Kimbo doesn’t really seem to shine.

After jockeying for position, Roy Nelson seemed to wear Kimbo Slice down at the end of the first round, even after a few unsuccessful attempts by Slice to kick off from the cage. In the second round, Nelson did not want to take any chances standing toe to toe with Slice’s amazing punching power. After a couple of jabs, Nelson managed to ground Kimbo again in the second round. When this happened, as with most UFC fights, the books were closed on this one. After a few weak punches to Kimbo Slice’s head, the match was over. While he did not tap out, it was evident that he was very beaten.

It is noteworthy to state that UFC president Dana White was not impressed with the win, as Kimbo is still not versed when it comes to many elements of the UFC. Even though the world has seen him decimate many opponents on popular streaming video sites, he is still a long way from excelling in MMA.

Vitor Belfort made good on his return to the UFC, in his UFC 103 headlining bout against former UFC champions Rich Franklin.

Belfort, a vetren of the sport, hit Franklin with a right, then dropped him with a left before forcing Yves Lavigne to call a stop to the contest with more punches to the downed Franklin.

Tonight’s bout was held at a catchweight of 195 pounds. Belfort’s plan is to move back down to the middleweight division to pursue current 185-pound boss Anderson Silva.

“I’m here to work,” said Belfort, now 19-8. “Anderson is my friend and I like him as a fighter, but I’m here to fight anybody.”

Franklin, 27-5, 1 NC, who has lost two of his last three, will take some time to figure out his next move.

“Losing wasn’t part of my plan, so I’m going to let the dust settle and see what’s going on,” said Franklin.

Cyborg vs.Carano Makes History

While the UFC has opted to avoid promoting female fights, the San Jose based promotion Strike Force has gotten into the game with a proverbial bang. August 15, 2009 saw Cristiane Cyborg defeat the tough and highly popular Gina Carano via ground and pound in the first round. Adding to the excitement and drama of the fight, the bout was stopped with one second left in the first round as Carano was unable to continue.

The bout was not one that involved much in terms of a feeling out process. Both fighters immediately started swinging as soon as the bell rang. Carano seemingly gained the advantage at first by knocking Cyborg backwards with a series of on-target straight punches. Carano and Cyborg clinched and this proved to be Carano’s undoing as she was immediately thrown to the ground.

Once the fight hit the ground, Cyborg immediately started to dominate her opponent. Cyborg was able to catch Carano in a bent armlock but was unable to finish the lock. Struggling to defend herself from the lock, it appeared Carano had exerted a lot of energy. This would further make it difficult to mount a comeback. Cyborg was able to gain a top position and then started to reign down strikes on Carano. This appeared to be too much for Carano who was on the receiving end of a series of vicious blows. The bout ultimately had to be stopped and Cyborg was victorious in a match that will go down in the annals of MMA fight history as a seminal moment in the development of women’s professional fighting.

Cyborg is now the first Strike Force Women’s Champion and she will surely be facing a series of eager challengers. For Carano, the future will revolve around working her way up the rankings for title contention. If there is a rematch between the two, it will be a highly anticipated one.
