Jennifer Hudson will soon play the role of Ms Madikizela-Mandela, who is one of the most celebrated yet controversial figures South Africa has ever seen. She is the ex-wife of Nelson Mandela and was responsible for freeing him from prison on Robben Island after twenty seven years of incarceration. This is one of the reasons for her popularity, even though they were divorced a short four years later.
Ms Madikizela-Mandela, also known as Winnie, has also been linked to a murder. A young activist named Stompie Seipei was thought by some to be an informer for the apartheid government. Many believe this is what led to her kidnap and death. Ms Madikizela-Mandela has denied any involvement, but most believe she played a role. She has also been charged with theft and fraud, which took place in 2003.
Jennifer Hudson will have the challenge of doing such a dynamic character justice on the big screen. Based on her successes to date, it would probably be wise to put your money on her opposed to against her. This could also act as an avenue toward a bigger role in the entertainment world.
