South Dakota authorities reported that they recently arrested a 45 year old woman who was found passed out in a stolen delivery van with a blood alcohol content of .708, which is almost nine times the state’s legal limit.
The incident which occurred on December 1 stuns officials as blood alcohol levels above .40 are considered lethal. South Dakota state’s attorney Jesse Sondreal said he had never heard of a blood alcohol level that high before and that the state’s previous unofficial was .56.
News of the December 1 incident started gaining national attention this past Monday as Engle was found again passed out behind the wheel of another stolen vehicle. Engle seemed to have been trying to flee the state as she did not show for a court appearance a few days earlier.
While Engle appears to hold the South Dakota record, the national unofficial record for blood alcohol content still belongs to Terri Corner of Oregon who was arrested with a blood alcohol content of .720 in 2007.
