Gina Carona, whose beautiful looks had been featured for months to hype up her upcoming historic match, finally fought Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos Saturday night at the San Jose HP Pavillion. The results of the match suggested that promoters focused on the right aspect for Gina Carona, as she did not stand much of a chance from the start in the ring. Carona’s pleasing looks took a heavy beating Saturday night as Cristiane Santos defeated her with one second remaining in the first round of the first ever women’s main event on a major mixed martial arts card.
Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos defeated Gina Carona on a technical knockout in the first round of Saturday night’s fight. The historic win with 1 second left in the first round gave Santos the Strikeforce mixed martial arts featherweight title. The Brazilians Santos squared off with Carona, utilizing every corner of the cage throughout the first round for what seemed to be the longest 5 minutes round ever.
“Cyborg” Santos was in control of the round, and eventually got Carona, and the fight, to the ground with about 20 seconds remaining in the first round. Carona took a flurry of punches to her arms and face for the next 20 seconds, rendering her defenseless on the ground. Though there was just one second remaining in the round, referee Josh Rosenthal was forced to stop the fight as Carona was not moving or defending herself at all.
The fight started off at a fast pace with Santos, eying the crown for the 145 women’s weight class, throwing a barrage of punches, and a leg lock after getting her opponent on the ground following a quick take down. Carona showed spirit early, fighting off the relentless strikes of Cyborg, answering with a take down of her own. In the end, however, Santos proved to be too much for Carona, who said she had been training for this fight for 5 years, and knew exactly how hard it would be.
