New York – Svetlana Kuznetsova kept name recognition alive in a star-shy bottom half of the draw as she struck a blow for the old guard with a 6-2, 6-3 defeat of Victoria Azarenka to start the second week of the US Open on Monday.
The Russian who lifted the 2004 title at Flushing Meadows stands out amid the depleted field, where four teenaged talents entered in the battle for quarter-final spots.
Among those already eliminated during Week one: Maria Sharapova, Nicole Vaidisova, Martina Hingis and Nadia Petrova.
The victory in 74 minutes ended the hopes of the 18-year-old Azaranka from Belarus, as Kuznetsova broke five times on the way to victory.
Kuzy, considered a veteran at age 22, is one of four former champions in the draw (Serena and Venus Williams and Justine Henin are the others).
Since lifting the title three years ago, her best New York showing was a fourth round finish a year ago. The Russian won her first title of the season a week ago in the New Haven warmup event.
