Herds Often Feed Facing Same Direction Day After Day
Essen, Germany- It has been known for a long time that cattle in farmer fields often face the same direction, every day when they feed.
But scientists are finding there may be a specific reason for this behavior.
Scientists have discovered that the direction that cattle herds face is often along a North-South axis of direction. They are theorizing that the magnetic field of the Earth may play a factor in this.
Other theories are that the position of the sun, or the prevailing wind in an area may affect which direction that cattle choose to face when they graze.
Researchers from the University of Duisburg-Essen looked at and examined over 8,510 different images from the Google Earth software program, of 308 different fields and pastures from a variety of different locations around the Earth.
Some were including “deer field,†impressions of wild Deer, from 225 different areas in the Czech Republic.
No matter if the animals were resting, laying down or grazing, the animals almost always faced either toward magnetic North or the South Pole.
This was found no matter what direction the sun and wind were, as it varied a great deal among the different regions visited photographically.
The chief researcher for the German team is Sabine Begall, and Begall and his colleagues found that the only real reason has to be the influence of the Earth’s magnetic field.
No other reason would explain the reactions of thousands of animals, at hundreds of different locations, consistently facing either North or South.
