First Attempt At Colliding Protons And Neutrons Scheduled
Geneva, Switzerland- The first activity of accelerating protons is scheduled to take place at the famous Hadron Super Collider beginning next month.
The Collider is located near Geneva and it will take protons and accelerate them using giant magnetic fields, making them accelerate faster and faster.
It is housed in a 16.7 mile tunnel that has cost several billion dollars to produce, but when fully operational in 2010 it is believed that it will offer insights into matter and other scientific discoveries.
It is both a prototype and a finished product, being the first and only of its kind.
Start up procedures for the Super Collider are very complex, and they take a lot of preparation before the facility can attain full production status.
Part of the work involves cooling each of the eight sections of the huge machine, and various types of final electric testing.
There are about 1,600 super conducting magnets found on the new Super Collier, and it is believed there are a lot of different experiments that ill be able to be performed by the new facility.
The facility nears its first start up acceleration based on projections, and scientists across the world are excited.
