Source Of Salmonella Cause May Not Be Found Says FDA
Washington, D.C.-The precise cause of the Salmonella illness that has stricken the nation may never totally be uncovered according to the Food and Drug Administration.
The origin of tomatoes that have been found to have salmonella on them and that have caused hundreds of people across the nation to become ill may never be isolated.
Several different causes that have been apparently backtracked have fallen apart on closer examination.
Now, after weeks of intense investigation the FDA and the CDC both say they are not any closer to declaring where the salmonella first originated, what is causing it, or where it came from.
“We may ultimately never known where this came from,†said Dr. David Acheson.
Dr. Acheson is the FDA associate commissioner for foods and one of the leading investigators looking into the Salmonella food crisis.
The agency is trying to find out where a cluster of 9 people who ate tomatoes from the same source ate, but they have not disclosed the name of the restaurant or any other information.
Many different leads have appeared to be promising at different times, but then later have fallen apart. The personnel at the CDC, FDA, and state and local health offices are all very frustrated at the inability to track the disease back to its source.
