Washington (EON) – Two scientists were given the honor of the Nobel Prize for their development of artificial heart valves.
Alain Carpentier as well as Albert Starr were honored as recipients of the 2007 Albert Lasker Award for Clinical Medical Research.
The award is called American’s Nobel Prize and has been given every year since 1946.
Carpentier managed to fix the problems Lowell Edwards and Albert Starr were having with their synthetic valves in the 1960s. He fixed the problems and helped produce a commercial product which is still used today.
90,000 people each year in the U.S. have heart valves replaced which is an amazing number.
