Toronto – After a 35 day strike, the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 416 and the city of Toronto have reached what has been called the “basis of a deal” after a 48 hour ultimatum was issued by union president, Mark Ferguson.
The deal was reached early Monday, July 27. The strike had stopped garbage pick-up and other municipal services.
There is no deal yet between Local 79, which represents indoor workers, and the city.
At issue in the union contracts were pay increases and bankable sick days, which workers could save up and then cash in upon retirement. According to the city, this policy was too expensive.
The exact details of the agreement have not been revealed yet, as it has not been voted upon by union members.
Ferguson has also said that he would not be satisfied until a deal is made between the city and Local 79. However, the tentative agreement between Local 416 and the city bodes well for an agreement between Local 79 and the city and finally, for the end of the strike.
