Toronto – Two major unions in Toronto, which represent city workers in industries such as garbage pickup and daycare among others, officially went on strike as of Monday morning. The decision directly affects about 24,000 workers employed by the city.
The two unions, the Toronto Civic Employees’ Union Local 416 and the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 79, came to the decision to strike after weeks of failed negotiations with the city. The major issues of contention between the unions and the city revolve around contract issues, including sick leave and seniority. Though the two unions are organizing picket lines, they remain committed to continuing the bargaining process.
The rest of Toronto will also be impacted by the strike, and various public services are already reported to be shut down for the time being. Many city operated facilities, such as pools, fitness centers, and libraries, will not be open. More than that, services such as water testing at beaches and garbage pickup in most areas are also temporarily canceled.
The city remained committed to negotiations throughout the weekend, suggesting that a strike was not necessary. However, union leaders were unimpressed by the city’s efforts. All parties remain committed to reaching resolution.
