Residents Still Awaiting Permission To Return Home
Toronto- The explosion on Sunday of a propane facility in a NW Toronto Neighborhood has led to dozens of homes being destroyed and rendered unable to be inhabited.
A six-alarm fire was announced and responded to early Sunday morning, and officials and firefighters rushed to the scene to deal with the huge explosion.
A huge section of Northwest Toronto was evacuated, as flames shot hundreds of feet into the air, and smoke billowed for miles.
The Toronto Sunrise Propane Industrial Gas facility burst into flames in a major explosion that has not been determined as to the specific cause.
Debris from the explosion was scattered for several kilometres, with damaged pieces of metal being found quite a distance from the explosion.
This means that thousands have been evacuated, and for certain about 50 homes have been destroyed and will not be able to be returned to.
Toronto officials have also announced that they have found evidence of asbestos on the scene, so it may be even more time before people are allowed back into the area.
At first glance nearly 12,000 people have had to be evacuated, nearly one quarter of the 1.6 kilometre swath that was evacuated remains off limits.
