Teenager Pulled From Water Just Seven Kilometres From Toronto
Toronto- The effort to swim across Lake Ontario from Niagara-On-The-Lake to Toronto was aborted on Tuesday due to the threat of dangerous lightning.
The effort of Kingston native Natalie Lambert, 14 years of age were defeated when the team leader supervising her swim effort made the safety decision to pull the young swimmer from the water, just 7 km short of her goal of Toronto.
Lambert had entered the water at 7:20am and had been swimming for nearly 15 hours when she was required to leave the water due to the threat of lightning and inclement weather.
The storm came up suddenly and looked like it may pass by but then there was lightning directly overhead and swim team leader John Munro made the call to have Natalie leave the water for her own safety.
As soon as Lambert was pulled from the water and was safe, she immediately began to talk excitedly about her next attempt to swim across Lake Ontario.
Lambert has completed another crossing of Lake Ontario in 2007, from Sackets Harbour in New York to Kingston.
This was her second attempt to cross Lake Ontario on this route that has been canceled by weather, and she looks forward to her next attempt, which will hopefully be in better weather.
