Brampton, Ontario- In an unusual event, a CN Freight train was derailed leading to traffic snarl and commuter problems. This happened in the wee morning hours just after 2am, and is an event that fell squarely during the morning rush hour chaos.
The event promises to linger throughout the morning commute, a swift resolution does not appear to be in the offing. The regional manager for CN Freight lines, Frank Binder said that the rail fracas would continue to affect the situation for several hours.
“Both the Via Rail and Go Transit lines are completely blocked, and will be for the next few hours,†said Binder in a statement to the press.
The train was headed westbound when the freight cars came off the tracks. The CN main line had nearly 150 cars that would up derailing just after 2am. There were not any reports of injuries, no evacuations were reported or needed, and the police on the scene did not detect any sort of hazardous materials or leaks.
“Fortunately all the cars that left the tracks were either carrying general freight or empty,†said Binder. GO Transit canceled all of the Georgetown line trains except for two, and Via Rail service says that its transit service will also remain impacted through out the day.
