Toronto – With the security of a diplomat, an opening musical act fit for a pop star and the humble attitude one might expect from a 72-year old monk, The Dalai Lama kept an audience of 16,000 captivated for nearly two hours at the Roger’s Centre. He removed a pair of brown leather shoes to sit cross-legged on a sofa. Then he adjusted a burgundy-coloured visor on his forehead to block the stadium lights, and when he got himself comfortable he began to speak without notes, his voice echoing through the air.
His Holiness warned the crowd not to expect much, that he had no miracles to offer, no special healing powers. ‘Speaker and audience, same, same human beings.”
He also said we too often get caught up in our differences and this can be problematic. The Tibetan monk insisted we should focus on our similarities instead.
He spoke of family values, secularism and highlighted that we need dialogue instead of war.
Outside of the stadium, many audience members said they were surprised at how real the Tibetan monk had seemed and how they were inspired by his talk.
The Dalai Lama returns to India today, completing his tour of the west.
