Toronto Flooding With Heavy Rain

Students at Ward’s Island School in Toronto will be in school on the ground Friday, because of the “risk of flooding,” says the Toronto Public School Board.

The students were transferred to the Nelson-Mandela school.

Environment Canada expects up to 70 mm of rain by the end of the day on Saturday, when Lake Ontario is already at its highest level since the early 1990s.

A ferry is ready to evacuate the 700 residents of Ward’s Island from Toronto, if needed. Residents erect sandbag walls to protect their property:

In addition, the ferry service to Central Island and Hanlan’s Point was suspended.

John Tory, the Mayor of Toronto visited the islands on Friday afternoon to assess the situation and meet with residents.

According to him, 3000 bags of sand were brought on the spot.
