A major pile-up forces the closure of Highway 401 in both directions for a distance of 15 to 20 kilometers near the Thousand Islands in Ontario.
According to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the affected highway segment is located between Mallorytown and Reynolds Roads. Approximately 30 vehicles would be involved in this incident, and according to the OPP, they are both cars and transport trucks. The police were called to the scene around 2 pm on Tuesday.
One of the vehicles was carrying a hazardous material. Due to a leak, the area was evacuated and bypass roads are in place. It is unknown whether there are any injuries on the premises.
Police officers are advising motorists in the area not to leave their vehicles because of the dangers posed by the “very toxic” chemical.

“The OPP is working very closely with our emergency partners to address the situation as best we can. We are concerned about one of the vehicles that appears to have a leak of a toxic substance. Our members are working with our partners on this issue in particular, “said Sgt. Peter Leon of the OPP.
On Facebook, a man identifying himself as an employee of a trucking company, Dave Somerville, published a video in which one can see a long line of trucks and other vehicles, some damaged. Semi-trailers are even found in the grassed median of the highway.
