Pregnant Woman Contracted Disease From Another Source
Toronto- A case of listeria that has befallen a pregnant woman that caused her to fall ill and give birth prematurely is a case of strange coincidence it appears.
Despite occurring in the same region as the current Canadian listeria outbreak, the woman contracted her case of listeria it appears from consuming some cheese that had been allowed to attain room temperature.
Both the woman and her infant recovered, and have been released. She was stricken in mid August, and there are no links between her and the Maple Leaf meat products that have caused all of the other cases of listeria that are currently being reported in Ontario and elsewhere in Canada.
Most of the cases have been in the Toronto and Ontario area. A few individual cases have been reported in Alberta and British Columbia.
Sliced meat and meat products from the Maple Leaf Toronto food plant have been recalled, and they are linked with the current outbreak that has resulted in a total of 15 deaths so far, with many more scores of people being struck down with the listeria illness.
While the death count has remained lower than initially feared, it still is a serious and infectious disease that threatens the public safety of Canada and by extension the entire North American continent.
The pregnant woman and her case of listeria was at first believed related and was widely reported as affiliated with the current outbreak, but later was proven to be an independent case.
