One Person Is Dead And 16 Believed Sick Due To Tainted Food

Toronto- Different grocers and food stores in Edmonton, Toronto and across Canada are pulling meat from their shelves, trying to ensure that no tainted meat involved in the massive meat recall is being sold.

Health Authorities in Ontario are still trying to get a handle on the huge outbreak of sickness that authorities believe are linked to bacteria in tainted meat.

There are 16 reported cases of people becoming very sick after consuming meat that has shown high levels of bacteria, and one reported death following consumption of the meat.

The meat being recalled is an expansion of an earlier meat recall from processed meats from the Maple Leaf Foods plant in Toronto.

Restaurants, including Mr. Sub and McDonalds in Canada, Deli Counters, Nursing homes, and other institutions are the main customers of the tainted meat, which has been tested and found to have a high bacterial content of the Listeria monocytogenes, which causes Listeriosis.

Listeriosis symptoms include nausea, headache, vomiting and general signs of food poisoning, and in the worst cases can require hospitalization.

In some cases, it can even cause death, especially in people with suppressed or weakened immune systems
