High Winds Expected On Friday May Worsen Fire Situation

Prince Albert, Saskatchewan- Officials monitoring the forest fires in northern Saskatchewan are worried that the expected higher winds on Friday may make the fires worse.

If the winds that are expected in the region come true, the conditions in the entire region may worsen swiftly into truly dangerous situations.

Citizens of Deschambault, Stony Rapids, Uranium City, Black Lake, Sandy Bay, and Pelican Narrows have been transported by bus to Saskatoon, Regina and Prince Albert for their safety.

Their evacuations were triggered by the presence of thick choking smoke that put many of the residents at risk.

Firefighters seemed to have gotten a handle on the different multiple blazes, but with the fires at low ebb the high winds may fan the fires back into dangerous shape.

“It seems that they are under control for now, but evacuations may be required again if the winds fan the flames back,” said Dave Hobden.

Mr. Hobden is a spokesperson with Saskatchewan emergency social services department.

Residents that have been evacuated are being housed in a variety of places, hotel rooms, dormitory rooms and locations at the University of Saskatchewan.
