Top General Claims New Plan To Bear Higher Cost Than Announced

Ottawa-The new defence strategy that was previously announced by the Harper government will cost up to $50 Billion over twenty years- up to $20 Billion dollars more than said previously.
Lieutenant General Walter Natynczyk said that between $45 and $50 billion would be expended on a variety of ships, fighter planes, combat vehicles, aircraft and other military supplies. The money would be spent under Canada’s First Defence Strategy formed by the current Conservative Government.
While they appeared willing to speak more openly on the subject it was apparent that senior military officials are working hard to be circumspect about specific details about the new Canada Defence plan.
Other than a brief opening statement issued by Lieutenant General Natynczyk, military officials at a hastily arranged briefing were not identified by name, and they did not answer specific questions about details for the new defence initiative.
“I am living within the limitation that the government places on me with regard to public affairs, what is important is the direction of the government in this area,” said General Natynczyk.
The office of Prime Minister Stephen Harper has been exerting stronger levels of control over the Department of Defence in the last several months after the treatment of detainees in Afghanistan caused some controversy.
