Investigation Reveals Sudden Death Of 35 Rays

Calgary- The cause of death of over thirty of the stingrays on display at the Calgary Zoo over the weekend is cause for great alarm with zoo officials.

An additional Stingray perished on Tuesday, bringing the total death toll of the Ray exhibit to 35 dead Stingrays, and there appears to be no readily apparent cause for the mortality of these aquatic animals.

The remaining eight Stingrays at the Calgary Zoo facility are being carefully monitored and are in a special highly oxygenated tank under close medical supervision.

The health of the remaining Stingrays appears to be improving, two stingrays of the eight have began to eat again and officials are hopeful that no more of the animals will die.

Spokeswoman for the Calgary Zoo, Laurie Herron said that they are cautiously hopeful that the worst is over and that the animals will recover fully.

After normal Sunday Zoo hours one of the stingray keepers observed that some of the stingrays seemed to be acting erratically.

By Monday morning, there were suddenly 34 dead stingrays, and no apparent cause in sight.

“We don’t want to sit and speculate, there are a wide variety of reasons why this may have happened,” said Ms. Herron. “We do know all conditions appeared normal, so at this point it is a mystery what exactly happened,” said Ms. Herron.

While an investigation continues, at this point the reason for the stingray mortality has not yet been discovered. Zoo officials remain hopeful that the cause will be uncovered and prevented from happening again.
