Canadian Sale To American Company Affects Canada’s Independence

Ottawa- The sale of the biggest company in Canada that produces aerospace and space products is being sharply criticized by some as an issue of Canadian and Arctic sovereignty.

Alliant Techsystems Inc is seeking to purchase the Geospatial unit of MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates for $1.3 billion dollars.

Former Canadian Forces Commander Northern Area Pierre LeBlanc has come forth and stated for the record that selling a unit of MacDonald Dettwiler to American Interests would sharply affect the ability of Canada to be and remain a Sovereign player in the Arctic Arena.

“It would be a huge mistake for the sale of this company to go through, and a decision that I hope will be decided against,” said Marc Carneau. Mr. Garneau is one of the most famous Canadian Astronauts, and he also spoke out against the sale joining Former Commander LeBlanc.

The proposed sale would include Radarsat 2, a satellite radar system that assists vessel detection in the Arctic. Currently it belongs to Canada, but the sale would put it under U.S. Jurisdiction.

“The sale of this type technology to anyone, even our ally the United States is a very dangerous move, it would limit our ability to have surveillance in the Arctic,” said LeBlanc.

“We have a excellent tool that gives us surveillance in the Arctic, and maintains our sovereignty and we are proposing selling it to the United States. This is not a wise move for us to make,” said LeBlanc.
