Those People Who Have Had Bariatric Surgery Experience Less Risks
New York-There appears to be a greater success at lowering cancer risk for those people that have had bariatric, or weight loss surgery.
Patients who have treated their morbid obesity by surgery have a greatly reduced risk of cancer than those who do not receive any treatment at all and who remain obese.
McGill University Bariatric Surgeons looked at the records of over 1000 of their weight loss surgery patients who received surgery and compared them to over 5,700 people who did not undergo surgery.
During a five-year follow up period just 2 percent of the patients that had surgery developed cancer, while nearly 9 percent of the patients that did not have surgery developed cancer.
That is a very dramatic difference, but some of the findings are viewed by some members of the medical profession with skepticism.
Still, those people that have had weight loss surgery are not only healthier; they appear on the surface to have reduced their risk for a number of different cancers, which is like having a blessing in disguise.
People who are over 100 pounds over their ideal weight are most often the ones that qualify and receive weight loss surgery. Surgical weight loss surgery is considered a last resort and is permanent.
