South Minnesota Is Expecting To Be Hard Hit
Rochester, MN-The recent floods and large amount of rain that has fallen in the Midwest is expecting many different communities to see a large insect population increase.
Scientists in and around the Rochester MN area are thinking that the large amount of floodwater is an excellent breeding area for mosquitoes, and are warning the public that the amount of insects this summer will be increased.
With the warmth and wet conditions, mosquitoes and other insects can take advantage of the conditions and emerge quite swiftly.
Two types of mosquitoes are normally found in these types of conditions.
The floodwater mosquito, or Aedes Vexans is known to appear when there is a lot of standing water, such is found in flood conditions. It lays eggs on the ground and when the eggs are covered with water and reach the right certain warmth and temperature then the eggs hatch into mosquitoes.
The eggs are laid and can survive for years until water and warmth reach them, which creates a large problem for areas in the Midwest.
Another type of mosquito is the container mosquito. These hatch and breed when there is standing water that has been sitting for weeks.
The best way to avoid this type of mosquito is to make sure that any containers that collect floodwater are dumped when cleaning up after a flood.
