Fresh Express announced the recall of five-ounce Organic Marketside Spring Mix salads that were distributed at Walmart stores in the southeastern United States after a dead bat was found inside a package.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said they are investigating the finding of the dead bat inside one of the salad boxes at a Walmart store in Florida. “Two people in Florida reported having eaten part of the salad before finding the bat,” the CDC said on its Web site .
“The bat was sent to a CDC rabies lab because some bats in the United States have been found to have rabies,” the statement said.
However, the CDC said that contracting rabies after eating an animal that has this disease is unusualbecause the virus does not survive for a long time outside the affected animal.
In addition to Florida, Fresh Express distributed such salads at Walmart stores in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia.
“Consumers who have eaten the product that has been removed and found no animal material are not at risk and do not need to contact the Health Department. CDC recommends that those who ate the product and found animal material inside contact the Department of Health for Be evaluated, “added the CDC.
