Smoking increases the risk of contracting colon cancer by 18 percent and the risk of dying from the disease about 25 percent. If you would like to improve your chances for not developing colon cancer then making the decision not to smoke will be the first step.

Toronto – Millions of Americans and Canadians are smokers and although many would like to quit this habit many are unable to do so. Although it is a difficult habit to quit there are very valid reasons why you should think twice about your decision to smoke.

Smoking causes many types of cancer in the United States, and colon cancer is now being linked to smoking. The risk of colorectal cancer is higher in persons who smoke, as well as the risk of dying from the disease.

Smoking can increase your chances for colon cancer because the smoke that is inhaled or swallowed contains carcinogens that are carried to the colon.

Also smoking increases the polyp size in the colon and the larger the polyp size the higher the chances that it will become cancerous.

Colon cancer is the third leading type of cancer in women in the united states and both men and women are developing colon cancer at about the same rate. Only lung cancer kills more americans than colon cancer.
