Local Religious Group Has No Vaccinations And Leads To Outbreak
Vancouver, B.C.-Â As people prepare to head back to school across North America there is an outbreak in Vancouver from the Mumps.
The leaders of various health organizations are aware where it came from but are relatively unable to stop it because of the issues involved.
A religious group that does not believe in vaccinations has had an outbreak, that was first caused by a visitor to their group from Alberta that was infected.
Because no one at the religious community has any antibodies against the disease, the entire group got sick.
There are 114 known cases of the mumps, with as many as 74 additional cases that have been suspected but not confirmed.
The health professionals are worried that the mumps could infect hundreds of people in the greater Metro Vancouver area because of the fact that in many cases people are vaccinated when they are very young, but they do not retain protection when they get older, decades later.
The health crisis appears to be under control, but it has not been established for sure if the mumps has been arrested. Because of the nature of the disease, people are being urged not to share different materials such as cigarettes, or drinking straws.
The health authorities in Vancouver feel certain that the members of the community are taking good care, many people are coming in for vaccinations that would not normally been seen.
