Researchers Find Specific Cancer Carries Its Own Scent
Washington, D.C. – There is new research that is revealing new characteristics about different types of cancers, things that were not known or realized previously about cancers.
The scent or odor that comes from the skin of skin cancer patients is different than what is found on healthy skin.
“The odor from skin from skin cancer patience is very different than normal skin,†said Michell Gallagher.
Dr. Gallagher is one of the lead researchers at the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia.
“We believe that one of the different biomarkers we have discovered may be sued to help detect skin cancer in a new and non-invasive manner,†said Dr. Gallagher.
The findings from Dr. Gallagher and her team were presented at the American Chemical Society National Meeting and Expo in Philadelphia, being held this week.
“This would be a most novel method to detect cancer, and could be done with a visual exam and a specific odor analysis, without needing a biopsy,†stated Dr. Gallagher.
The specific chemical analysis and method of profiling odor skin detection has not been used previously and marks a new area of possible cancer detection success.
