Researchers Successfully Yield Blood From Stem Cells
Chicago- In a bold but successful move, researchers have announced that they have succeeded in producing health human blood from stem cells.
The new study announced that they had produced as much as two or three collection tubes worth of human blood from stem cells, or the equivalent of 100 billion red blood cells.
The blood was yielded from a single plate of human embryo stem cells.
The stem cells had begun their early development, but then were prompted by exposure to certain human proteins to develop into human blood.
While it is a very promising process that should be studied further and investigated, it is a long way from replacing the need for live, human donor blood and blood banks.
Still, the research that was done by a team of researchers from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota were able to produce blood in several different blood types, including A Positive, A negative, B Positive, B Negative, and 0 positive.
The efforts have been attempted with small success before, but this recent effort was nearly 100 times more productive and effective than previous efforts at blood production.
According to the research team, much more study is needed, and it is not clear if the blood was of high enough quality to be used for transfusion.
Still, the research is promising and bears further investigation and research.
