Choice To Undergo Double Mastectomy Aggressive But Successful
Los Angeles, CA- In a surprising but more and more frequent choice of women, Actress Christina Applegate chose to aggressively fight her breast Cancer with a double mastectomy, having the majority of both breasts removed to avoid death from cancer.
More and more patients around the world are attacking breast cancer with such radical but effective methods of cancer prevention.
New studies are showing that more and more women around the world are opting to have mastectomy surgery, but that it may also be possible to have just as high a rate of survival if they have smaller, less invasive surgeries.
Ms. Applegate is 36 years old, and she was at increased high risk because her mother had the disease previously and she carries a rare gene mutation called BRCA-1 that increases the risk of youthful development of breast cancer.
Because of her genetic condition Ms. Applegate chose to deal with the situation and her cancer diagnosis with the radical choice to have both breasts removed in a double mastectomy.
Only about a maximum of 7 percent of people who develop breast cancer also have this mutation, which quadruples the risk if a person does develop breast Cancer that has the BRCA-1 genetic mutation.
