Teens May Have Higher Blood Pressure With Bad Sleep Habits
Cleveland, Ohio-Â Â A new study is indicating that poor sleep habits among teenagers may be causing an increased risk of high blood pressure.
Teenagers that do not sleep well, or that practice poor sleep habits can often have higher levels of blood pressure than others their same age, and also may experience elevated cardiovascular disease.
The researchers discovered that the odds of higher blood pressure is nearly 3.5 times as much for those that have poor sleep habits, and those that do not sleep enough have nearly 2.5 times as much risk for blood pressure and heart issues.
Adolescents with poor sleep habits and that do not sleep enough are causing a much higher risk to their health.
The new study is being reported in Circulation the journal of the American Heart Association.
The researchers looked at 238 young people, 115 young women and 123 boys and they were all in the age group 13 to 16 years old.
Not getting enough sleep appears to cause a number of different sleep and health issues, and if a teenager does get good quality sleep they are at much higher risk of many different high blood pressure and heart issues.
