Research Suggest Men Getting Screened More Often
New York –New research suggests that about 1 in 5 men are getting checked for prostate cancer, which is a vast improvement in screening rates.
However, the rate that men in the African American Community are being screened is still lacking and needs to be increased, according to health professionals.
The Findings for black men are discouraging and needs to be immediately addressed, according to senior investigator Dr. Judd W. Moul from Duke University.
“We encourage black men to get screened from age 40 to 45, but we are not seeing enough men get screened to make a difference,†said Dr. Moul.
Blood level screening reveal a protein called prostate specific antigen, or PSA, that can reveal the presence of cancer early and increase the success of treating it.
It is recommended that men get an annual screening starting at age 50, but there are many benefits for men that participate in screening starting at age 40.
The new data was posted online at the science journal Cancer and involved data collected on 58,511 men that are aged 40 or older.
Increased screening leads to the early discovery and successful treatment of prostate cancer.
