Ottawa Claims Citizens Seek Closure Of Vancouver Drug Site
Mexico City- The Government of Canada, as well as the majority of the public opinion across Canada is seeking the closure of the safe injection site that is currently in operation in Vancouver, British Columbia.
The Minister of Health for Canada, Tony Clement spoke out on the issue from Mexico City, Mexico, where he is attending the 17th International AIDS Conference.
“There has to be a line drawn at some point, and this is where Canadians are comfortable in drawing it,†said Minister Clement.
There is fairly broad support in the Ottawa government and across Canada for needle exchange programs, but when you set up a site and facilitate the injection of illegal drugs, then as a nation and as a province, the site in Vancouver has gone too far.
The controversial injection site is run by the Vancouver PHS Community Services Society, and it is called Insite.
Insite is the Vancouver safe injection site, and it has been a supervised injection site that provides care for addicts and encourages detox, but that does not prevent or discourage the actual illegal drug usage.
The spokesman for the PHS Community Insite service, Mark Townsend, was discouraged at the announcement, and called the controversy “depressing silliness.â€
