Welland MPP Introduces Bill To Make Organ Donation Default
Welland-The Welland member of the government has introduced a bill that would make donation of your organs automatic- unless you choose to opt out of the process.
While a noble idea, as has happened a number of times before, the bill quietly passed into oblivion, and didn’t even make it to the floor for a vote.
Each year in Ontario alone, about 140 to 250 (number varies each year) people pass away due to not having an organ ready for them, or not having anyone that is on the donation roster that is a close enough genetic match.
In Ontario there is a annual waiting list of about 1,700 Ontarians that need a organ to survive.
For the third time after failing two other times, Peter Kormos will introduce a bill in support of automatic organ donation upon the death of a resident of Ontario.
This would mean if a person dies a natural death, and if they have not opted out of the program, that their usable organs would be harvested when they die.
While this sounds garish, it is estimated that this program could potentially save many lives.
