Classification As A Drug Gives The FDA Regulatory Authority
Washington, D.C.- The House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved legislation on Wednesday giving the Food and Drug Administration regulatory authority over Tobacco for the first time since the Surgeon General declared that tobacco was a health hazard in the 1960’s.
The long history of warnings and the medical evidence about the cancer causing issues gave the momentum for the House to act in the means that it did.
The White House has said it opposes this particular bill for different reasons, so it is likely that the President will veto this bill, and there is no evidence that the Congress has enough votes on this particular issue to over ride the Presidential Veto.
The support in the House was strong, it passed on a vote of 326 to 102, showing the trend of change that has occurred in recent years concerning tobacco use.
The legislation was partly due to different active negotiations that have been held with tobacco giant Phillip Morris USA, and they split from other tobacco companies who strongly opposed the issue.
There have been a number of large health organizations that have spoken out in support of this new legislation, which is seen as a radical change from the medical status quo, and how things have been done in the past.
