Health Officials Agree Medical Technology On Verge Of Breakthrough
Bethesda, Maryland- Different groups of researchers all attacking the problem from different directions are in agreement; the advent of a artificial pancreas like device is just around the corner.
Using the idea of an insulin pump, and continuous glucose administration and monitoring experts in the metabolic and health fields feel that the seamless union of these two technologies is nearly upon us.
Having a mechanical or artificial pancreas gives the potential ability for those that require insulin to have a much higher quality of life as well as cutting down on finger sticks, injections and other harsh methods that members of the diabetic community currently deal with.
“We are literally close to a first generation artificial pancreas now,” said Dr. Roman Horvoka from the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom.
Dr. Horovoka is currently working with Abbott Laboratories and other companies, including Medtronic who manufactures continuous monitors and insulin pumps.
Devices in patients with Type I Diabetes have been undergoing testing by members of the Dr. Horvoka research team, and they are working enthusiastic and aggressively toward developing a method of insulin delivery that many would liken to creating the first artificial pancreas.
