Problems In Detection And Food Safety Rampant
Washington, D.C.- The outbreak of Salmonella in the United States, which first started in April, and the twisting winding path of the pursuit of its origin and cause has illustrated the different ways that the United States food safety measures are lacking.
After looking at tomatoes to death, it finally occurred to investigators to look at other items also, which led to the discovery of a single case of jalapeno peppers that showed salmonella contamination.
Meanwhile, tons of tomatoes that never harmed anyone were forced to rot in their storage bins, and in warehouses across the USA and in Mexico.
“Its certainly a mess, we have a lot of problems with the food safety program in the United States, when we gather in times of crisis, we don’t have a central leader, no one is in charge,†said Michael Doyle.
Mr. Doyle is the Director of Food Safety for the University of George Center for Food Safety, and one of the health professionals that have been working on the issue of salmonella food contamination for months.
The Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is just one of 12 different federal agencies that deal with an area or more of food safety, and they also rely on state health officials heavily in many cases.
