Rules For Labeling To Become Stricter

New National Canadian Rules Dictate More Detailed Ingredient List

Ottawa- Those members of the public who suffer from allergies and have to watch product labels will find their path a lot easier later this year.

The Canadian Minister of Health, Tony Clement announced on Wednesday the regulations surrounding labeling for food and other products were being made tighter, requiring more detail and revealing the contents more accurately.

Different allergy and food associations have been calm but firm in their urging for the Canadian Federal Government to take this action, and the new rules are being heralded from many in the industry.

The ingredients that currently are exempt or do not have to be listed under the current regulations will now have to be clearly listed on the ingredient list for food and other products.

This is believed to be an issue that will make things safer for those highly allergic to some substances, such as milk, wheat, peanuts or shellfish.

Charles Frankish is the Canadian Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology president, and he praised the actions of the Canadian Federal government in tightening the labeling regulations.

Nearly 4 percent of Canadian adults and about 6 percent of children in Canada suffer from severe food allergies.
