Scientific Evidence Provides Link With Several Health Issues
Ottawa-The organization Health Canada is putting pressure on the food industry in Canada to place limits on the amount of trans fat that is allowed into foods.
The effort is to gradually eliminate added trans fat in food that is manufactured in Canada, which generally follows the recommendation of a national Canada trans fat task force.
The amount of trans fat that is allowed for oils and margarine is currently limited to two percent, and the trans fat content for other types of food is capped at five percent, even in ingredients that are being marketed to food restaurants.
The food industry in Canada is being given two years to put these new mandated changes into place.
A lot of different scientific evidence is present that the presence of trans fat causes an increase in the overall risks of developing heart disease in all different ages.
Trans fat raises blood LDL cholesterol that is the bad cholesterol, and it lowers the level of good cholesterol HDL that helps prevent heart attacks.
The action of the Canadian government and different province action is one way to support the eventual elimination of trans fat from the human diet.
